NEW: Comprehension-Based Scoring
Coming Soon: MAIA-YCD User Manual

Comprehension-Based Scoring (CBS) was developed in response to MAIA-YCD clinical use with youth. Sometimes, youth struggle to understand interoceptive related concepts. In these cases, "I don't know" is a valid answer to MAIA-YCD items. Until now, there has been no reliable method of capturing those responses while maintaining validity of dimension scale scores.

The new dual-scoring system combines the original scoring procedures and an added layer of comprehension ratings for each dimensions of interoceptive awareness assessed. Together, this system strengthens the interpretive power and clinical utility of MAIA-YCD scores by flagging comprehension issues.

Dual scoring provides reliable estimates of interoceptive awareness while preserving clinically valuable information about interoceptive-related comprehension.

MAIA-YCD Manual FINAL Cover.png
  • Dual scoring framework: links interoceptive ratings with comprehension ratings for truer clinical picture

  • Guidance for distinguishing general comprehension from interoceptive-related literacy

  • How to build IA profiles  (relative strengths and weaknesses)

  • Measuring change over time (including tracking growth in interoceptive literacy and awareness)

The MAIA-YCD User Manual is a complete guide to administering and interpreting the MAIA-YCD. It provides clear scoring, interpretation, and assessment guidance so you can use results with greater confidence and consistency. It supports users in moving beyond “scores” to a clearer understanding of how a child or teen experiences internal body signals, so you can tailor supports, goals, and skill-building in developmentally appropriate ways.

This manual includes the new comprehension-based scoring system, designed to strengthen validity when youth are still developing interoceptive concepts. It verifies whether items and scales are understood, helping prevent “guessing” from being misread as low interoceptive awareness.

You’ll get a clear roadmap for dual scoring (linking interoceptive ratings with comprehension ratings), clinical interpretation by score type, and practical guidance for creating interoceptive awareness (IA) profiles, tracking change over time, and translating results into collaborative goals
